Having back pain for more than four to six weeks is typically an indication of inflammation or other abnormality that involves the facet joints. At Central Florida Pain Management, we offer a facet joint block for residents of Ocala, The Villages, and the nearby areas of central Florida.
What is a Facet Joint Block for Back Pain?
Facet joint blocks for back pain help with chronic pain that originates at the facet joints of your spine. These joints are found on each side of the pine at the points where two vertebrae connect. Facet joints give your spine the flexibility it needs for you to be able to twist your body and bend over.
What Are the Benefits of a Facet Joint Block?
Facet joint blocks are used for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. From a diagnostic standpoint, if the facet joint blocks reduce your pain, we can determine the source of your pain. Facet joint blocks are also performed as a complementary treatment that improves the outcomes of physical therapy and orthopedic treatments.
Am I a Candidate for a Facet Joint Block?
Facet joint blocks are typically recommended when conservative approaches, such as medications, do not provide you with the desired relief from chronic back pain. If you live with pain in your back, stiffness, and difficulties with bending or twisting your body, you may be a good candidate for facet joint block.
What is a Facet Joint Block Procedure?
Facet joint blocks may be administered into the facet joints or the nerve group that is suspected of causing your pain. We numb the area before the injection to help you stay relaxed. Fluoroscopy is used to guide the needle to the precise location where the medications are needed. You may experience a slight pressure when the medication is administered within the joints or into the group of nerves.
What is Recovery Like After a Facet Joint Block?
Muscle spasms are known to develop and cause increased pain after facet joint block. The spasms are short-term, and you can rest at home until the discomfort subsides. The medication that is administered to the facet joints contains anesthesia to numb the joint and steroids to help with inflammation. Expect the results to take seven to 10 days.
What is the Prognosis After a Facet Joint Block?
We have worked with patients who needed more than one facet joint block to address their chronic back pain. If your symptoms return, we can do additional facet joint blocks.
